The problems of Middle Eastern Christians are sometimes not discussed forthrightly, in part because of the anti-Muslim hysteria that frequently attends the topic in the Western media. In many ways, the problems of Christians are everyone’s problems—dispossession for Palestinians, autocratic rule for Egyptians and Syrians, war and sanctions for Iraqis, to list a few. But that perspective should not occlude the real discrimination that many of the region’s Christians face and the ways in which their problems are distinct. Middle East Report 267 offers a window on the diversity of the world’s oldest Christian communities and the complexity of their experiences.
